Brain injury research in New Jersey is promoted by the New Jersey Commission on Brain Injury Research, as established in 2004 by the Brain Injury Research Act.
NJCBIR's mission is the promotion of brain injury research resulting in treatments and cures for traumatic brain injuries.
NJCBIR encourages and promotes original research projects in New Jersey focusing nerve regeneration. The Commission has also established and maintains, along with the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, a central registry of all persons with traumatic brain injuries.
It is thought this research will give hope to the large number of New Jersey residents suffering the debilitating effects of a brain injury.
Research shows that between 12,000 and 15,000 New Jersey citizens suffer a brain injury each year. About 1000 of these brain injuries in New Jersey are fatal. Nearly 175,000 residents of New Jersey are currently living with disabilities from traumatic brain injuries, according to recent research.
The Brain Injury Research Act also created the New Jersey Brain Injury Research Fund, a nonlapsing revolving fund, to provide money for the research programs.
