Virginia does not currently have a Federal TBI
Program State Grant, but reports the following progress:
1. Garnered over $1 million in ongoing State
funding for brain injury services.
2. Developed two TBI documentaries and public
service announcements that aired on public
access television in multiple areas.
3. Developed a policymaker’s TBI manual that
was distributed to legislators, the Virginia
Disability Commission, and key stakeholders.
4. Developed an educator’s guide for primary
and secondary students with TBI that was
adopted by VA Department of Education and
disseminated to all public schools.
5. Completed a comprehensive "train the trainer"
package for an "Advocacy Academy" for
individuals with TBI and family members.
6. Developed and disseminated 5,000 "TBI and
Domestic Violence" tip cards.
7. Provided public awareness and specialized
training/materials to over 10,000 individuals.
8. Advocated successfully for licensing authority
of brain injury services providers, in
preparation for a Brain Injury Waiver.
Virginia identified a work plan to guide process of updating Virginia’s strategic plan for brain injury for 2006-2010; advance Virginia’s model of core services by seeking additional State funding; continue to advocate for State/Federal approval to fund a Brain Injury Medicaid Waiver; establish Virginia Brain Injury Council in Code of Virginia.
