Texas currently does not have a Federal TBI
Program State Grant, but reports the following progress:
1. Included culturally competent local/regional
resources/supports appropriate for individuals
with TBI and their families in the local
information and referral resource databases.
2. Ensured the 2-1-1 Alliance of Information and
Referral Systems/INFO LINE Taxonomy of
Human Services included brain injury terms.
3. Expanded brain injury awareness and
associated information and referral skills
among 2-1-1 specialists and Promotoras
(community health workers in Lower Rio
Grande Valley region), utilizing English and
Spanish training program.
4. Reviewed and commented on TBI-related
State legislation and reports.
5. Informed the State legislative process and
Department of Insurance regarding legislation
prohibiting insurers from excluding cognitive
rehabilitation coverage for TBI.
6. Provided training on TBI to case managers,
HHSC staff members.
7. Disseminated concussion cards to emergency
medical service providers, athletic trainers,
and professionals at annual conferences;
distributed family packets to trauma centers.
8. Updated bilingual First Steps brochure
(information on brain injury services/supports).
The Texas TBI State grant continues to participate with State agencies to ensure that barriers to coordinated and comprehensive TBI services and supports are eliminated, and to ensure that individuals with TBI and their families are appropriately served across the State.
