Rhode Island Federal TBI Program

The Department of Human Services, located in the Louis Pasteur Building, 600 New London Ave., Cranston, RI 02920, is the lead state agency in the Rhode Island Federal TBI Program.

Rhode Island has received $690,555 in Federal TBI Planning and Implementation Grants. The State has provided approximately $372,295 in matching support.

Rhode Island State Population & TBI

Rhode Island population in 2000: 1,048,319
Estimated TBI-related emergency department visits per year: 2,500
TBI-related non-fatal hospitalizations per year: 531
Estimated TBI-related disability per year: 214

Rhode Island does not currently have a Federal TBI Program State Grant, but reports the follwoing progress:

1. Completed a TBI Needs and Resources Assessment and developed a TBI State Action Plan.
2. Increased communication and collaboration with stakeholders, individuals with TBI, and their families.
3. Established a TBI Resource Center in an accessible storefront location.
4. Increased telephone queries and walk-ins to the TBI Resource Center by 300 percent - most likely due to the more than 8,000 fact sheets (in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Cambodian) and emergency medical technician cards (in English and Spanish) distributed statewide, plus radio broadcasts and a television news story.

Future activities include increasing public awareness of the causes and consequences of TBI, improving the TBI knowledge and skills of health and service professionals, improving access to information and resources on TBI for individuals with TBI and families, improving service coordination statewide, and a greater focus on person-centered services and supports, among other issues.

Also, Rhode Island continues to develop its Needs and Resource Directory as well as training videos.

Legislation has been introduced to expand the Governor’s Permanent Advisory Council and to establish a trust fund to pay for expanded services for people with TBI and their families.
