The Federal TBI Program in Nebraska

The Department of Education, Office of Special Populations, located at 301 Centennial Mall South, Lincoln, NE 68509, is the lead agency for the Nebraska Federal TBI Program.

Nebraska has received $750,000 in Federal TBI Planning and Implementation Grants. The State has provided approximately $375,000 in matching support.

Nebraska does not currently have a Federal TBI Program State Grant, but reports the following progress:

1. Completed a TBI Needs and Resources Assessment and developed a TBI State Action Plan.
2. Designed and established a coordinated service structure with a designated "point of entry" - NE Brainstorm.
3. Initiated a brain injury network focused on community awareness and education.
4. Established new services, including a service collaborative of vocational rehabilitation, health and education agencies.
5. Collaborated with Vocational Rehabilitation on pilots for employment for individuals who have sustained a traumatic brain injury.
5. Developed a Nebraska NEBrainstorm web site.
6. Provided training and educational materials to educators, service providers, state agencies and communities.

Nebraska’s priorities, as identified by its TBI State Action Plan, are to increase awareness of the service and support needs of individuals with TBI and their families, increase the local availability of services and supports, and improve the coordination of services and funding sources.
