Federal TBI Program in Kansas

Lead state agency for the Kansas Federal TBI Grant Program is the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, Division of Health Care Policy, Community Supports and Services, located at DSOB 10th Floor East, 915 SW Harrison, Topeka, KS 66612-1570.

The state of Kansas received $550,000 in Federal TBI Planning and Implementation Grants and reports $275,000 in matching support.

Grant objectives for Kansas are listed as:

1. Provide health professionals from targeted disciplines with educational opportunities and technical assistance to improve their ability to accurately identify and appropriately serve and/or refer individuals with TBI.
2. Enhance the ability of substance abuse counselors to provide appropriate supports and services to individuals with TBI by providing training in best practices.
3. Improve the statewide TBI service delivery system by promoting a more formally organized, self-sustaining TBI Statewide Advisory Board that addresses all TBI issues.

Progress reported by Kansas in the Federal TBI Grant Program includes:

1. Established a TBI Statewide Advisory Board.
2. Conducted a Needs and Resources Assessment and developed a TBI State Action Plan.
3. Collaborated with a local Veterans Administration Center on the development of a statewide TBI Conference.
4. Planned statewide forums on TBI for professionals from various service disciplines.

In their continuing effort, Kansas continues to address areas of need as identified by its TBI State Action Plan by promoting the awareness of TBI within various professional communities; developing a screening tool and licensure process for substance abuse counselors; and further developing the TBI Statewide Advisory Board.
