The Department of Health, Division of Health Access and Tobacco, is the lead agency for Florida's Federal TBI Program.
Florida has received $1,112,000 in Federal TBI Implementation and Post-Demonstration Grants, matching the federal grants with approximately $591,372.
Florida's population in 2000 was listed at 15,982,378. The Sunshine State reports an estimated 65,345 TBI-related emergency department visits per year, and estimated 12,719 TBI-related non-fatal hospitalizations per year, and an estimated 4,373 TBI-related disability per year.
Progress reported in Florida's Federal TBI Program includes:
1. Adapted the Partners in Policymaking model
of leadership training for individuals with TBI.
2. Increased awareness of TBI-related issues
and available resources for individuals with
TBI and their families through public
awareness campaigns with the copyrighted
slogan: Brain injury, it’s the last thing on your
mind, until it’s the ONLY thing.®;
3. A widely
circulated and utilized video, Faces of Brain
Injury;
4. A TBI training curriculum targeted to
nurses;
5. A public awareness campaign of
concussion that focused on coaches;
6. The
development and circulation of a mild
traumatic brain injury fact sheet that has been
sanctioned by the Florida Department of
Health and is produced and distributed to
hospitals, emergency rooms, health clinics,
and physicians offices statewide.;
7. The
development of referral protocols and
employment strategies that have increased
employment outcomes dramatically.
State resources are being leveraged to improve the employment outcomes for individuals with TBI. Florida has also been successful in integrating TBI issues in its Olmstead Planning initiatives and its Real Choice Systems Change Grant. Florida’s next project is a comprehensive and inclusive statewide needs assessment to develop a new five year TBI Strategic Plan.
