INJURIES

The California Federal Program for Traumatic Brain Injury

California's lead agency in the Federal Traumatic Brain Injury Program is the Department of Mental Health.

The Golden State has received $149,914 from Federal TBI Planning Grants anda the state has provided $80,828 in matching support.

In the 2000 census California reported a population of 33,871,648. There is an estimated 108,698 TBI-related emergency department visits per year in California, with 22,413 annual TBI-related non-fatal hospitalizations and 7,274 estimated TBI-related disability each year.

California does not currently have a Federal TBI Program State Grant but they reported the following progress:

1. Established the Department of Mental Health as the Lead Agency for coordinating TBI grant activities.

2. Established a TBI Statewide Advisory Board.

3. Completed a statewide Needs and Resources Assessment and developed a TBI State Action Plan.

Even though the state's limited resources have temporarily precluded active implementation of California's TBI State Action Plan, efforts continue at the grassroots level to increase awareness of TBI and to improve access to existing services through statewide training, a new Web site, and the nationwide toll-free information hotline.

Legislation has been introduced to extend the sunset date of the TBI Fund and advocates continue to promote the permanent establishment of the Fund.
