Federal Program in Arkansas for TBI

Arkansas's lead agency in the Federal TBI Program is the Department of Health and Human Services.

Arkansas received $149,756 in TBI Planning Grants, matching the Federal grants with approximately $77,389.

The population of Arkansas in 2000 is listed at 2,673,400. TBI-related emergency department visits per year total 15,225, with 1,263 TBI-related non-fatal hospitalizations, and 1,019 TBI-related disabilities.

The progress of Arkansas in the TBI Program is stated as:

1. Division of Health, Department of Health and Human Services has assumed responsibility as the new Lead Agency for TBI.

2. Established a culturally and geographically diverse TBI Statewide Advisory Board.

3. Previously conducted a statewide Needs and Resources Assessment and created a TBI State Action Plan.

Arkansas will continue to improve the quality of life for individuals with TBI and their families. Key activities will include creating an infrastructure for the development and sharing of resources; increasing communication and awareness of TBI-related issues and resources; recommending legislative and organizational policy changes; conducting cross disciplinary education among providers, and sustaining funding for TBI-related activities.
