Arizona's lead agency for the Federal TBI Program is the Department of Economic Security, Governor’s Council on Spinal and Head Injuries.
The state of Arizona received $687,052 in TBI Implementation and Post-Demonstration Grants and matched these Federal grants with $598,365.
The population of Arizona in 2000 was listed at 5,130,632. The state has an estimated 25,229 TBI-related emergency department visits per year, with 4,114 TBI-related non-fatal hospitalizations, and 1,689 TBI-related disabilities per year.
The progress of Arizona in the Federal TBI Program is listed as:
1. Developed new educational materials, and
purchased and disseminated existing
materials to consumers and providers.
2. Developed and provided professionals (e.g.
educators, nurses, agency personnel) with
TBI-related training on the service and support
needs of children with TBI.
3. Convened an interactive TBI Symposium with
policy makers to discuss multi-agency
systems change issues.
4. Developed a statewide TBI service
coordination program within the Maternal and
Child Heath Bureau, Office for Children with
Special Health Care Needs.
Despite many sustained accomplishments and
systems changes, TBI grants in Arizona have helped identify
the need for the following systems changes:
1. The
coordination among systems serving children.
2. The
development of TBI service standards.
3. The
identification of children with TBI.
4. Mitigating the policy and program eligibility
differences among service programs that limit the
delivery of services.
