Federal TBI Program for the State of Alaska

The Division of Behavioral Health of the Department of Health and Social Services serves as the Alaska lead agency in the Federal TBI Program administered by Health Resources and Services Administration of the Department of Health and Human Services.

The state of Alaska has received $535,263 in Federal TBI Planning and Implementation Grants of which $328,498 was matched by the state.T

Alaska had a population of 626,932 during the 2000 census year. The estimated number of TBI-related emergency department visits per year is 2,953, with TBI-related non-fatal hospitalizations numbering 459. Each year approximately 177 Alaskans suffer a TBI-related disability.

Objectives of the Alaska grant from the Federal TBI program are:

1. Use existing research-based knowledge, state-of-the-art systems development approaches and best practices in screening, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation services.

2. Maintain capacity to sustain the incorporation of culturally competent TBI services within the State’s service delivery systems.

3. Encourage individuals with TBI and their families to remain persistent in their oversight of statewide planning for culturally competent TBI services and supports.

Progress of Alaska in the program is listed as:

1. Established the Department of Health and Social Services, Division of Behavioral Health as the Lead Agency.

2. Established a TBI Statewide Advisory Board.

that obtained 501 (c) (3) non-profit status. 3. Integrated TBI into the State’s existing screening tool, which is used by all Community Mental Health and abuse grantees.

4. Conducted training and conferences for statewide Behavioral Health providers to build capacity in treatment of cognitive, emotional and behavioral symptoms related to TBI.

Alaska continues to incorporate TBI into existing systems and is working to raise awareness of TBI issues in the behavioral health setting in order to improve treatment outcomes for individuals with TBI and their family members. It is also incorporating TBI issues in other complementary Federal grant projects, such as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Integration program.
