INJURIES

Federal TBI Program

The Federal Traumatic Brain Injury Program was authorized by Congress through the TBI Act of 1996 to as recognition to the number of families seeking access to community-based services. The purpose behind the act was to conduct further studies and to set up new programs for TBI.

The Act authorized the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to set up grant programs to help the states identify and address the TBI needs of their citizens.

Administration of the Federal TBI Program was given to the Maternal and Child Heath Bureau of the HRSA. More than $8.4 million was allocated to the bureau for the TBI Program for fiscal year 2006.

The state vision of the program is to provide all individuals with TBI and their families with accessible, available, acceptable and appropriate services and supports.

The following pages detail the progress of each of the 50 states in fulfilling the vision of the Federal TBI Program.
