Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury

A traumatic brain injury is a life-altering event. A TBI can affect nearly every aspect of one's life.

The three most common causes of TBI are the following:

  • Motor vehicle, bicycle, or vehicle-pedestrian mishaps (more than 50%)
  • Falls (approximately 25%)
  • Violence (nearly 20%)

Automobile-related injuries involve people of all ages. An auto accident is the most common cause of TBI. For the elderly and the very young a fall is the most common, cause of TBI. Two other common factors that can cause TBI are medication, and alcohol related injuries. A gunshot wound accounr for a precentage of brain injuries, Nine out of ten people who incur TBI from a gunshot wound will die.
