MUNICH: Following in the footsteps of Dell and Apple, Japanese electronics maker Toshiba plans to recall defective laptop batteries made by Sony.
Unlike the Dell and Apple products, however, the Toshiba batteries do not run the risk of overheating and hence are not a safety threat. The batteries instead can potentially fail to charge and discharge properly, according to Toshiba.
The company's statements indicate that the problem affects batteries sold as accessories or contained in specific laptops manufactured between March and May 2006. A company spokesperson declined to provide precise numbers.
Owing to the brief production time window, the recall does not "correspond in dimension" to the previous recalls by Dell and Apple. Both companies were forced to recall millions of defective Sony batteries recently.
Reports hold that some 340,000 batteries are affected for Toshiba. The company is offering its customers a new battery free of charge...
