Ford recalling 130,000 Escapes for seat belt defect
(Dearborn, Mich.-AP, Dec. 10, 2003 9:40 AM ) _ Ford Motor Co. is recalling 130,000 Ford Escape sport utility vehicles because of a defect that can cause the driver and front-seat passenger seat belts to fail to latch.

The recall, announced Tuesday, covers 2001-model Escapes. There has been one minor injury reported as a result of the defect, Ford spokesman Glenn Ray said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been investigating complaints about the seat belts. Ray said the recall was voluntary and was not ordered by the agency.

A plastic part in the seat belt latch can break and cause the belt either to fail to lock or to engage only partially, Ray said.

Ford has informed dealers of the recall and plans to mail letters to Escape owners next month, he said...
